Mary McDonnell
Mary McDonnell is an actress who has
been nominated for two Oscars(r). She is famous for her portrayals of
characters in period and contemporary screen roles. Mary Eileen McDonnell was
the daughter of John McDonnell (a computer consultant) and Eileen (Mundy), who
is a Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania native. Her birthplace was Ithaca, New York and
graduated from Fredonia State University of New York. Then, she went to the
drama school and was accepted to the Long Wharf Theatre Company in East Coast.
In the following two decades she was offered her first film role, in Kevin
Costner's Dances with Wolves (1990) where she played "Stands with a
Fist" she was a white girl born to the Sioux Indians. Her first Academy
Award nomination was for this role. McDonnell's film credits include Lawrence
Kasdan's Grand Canyon (1991) & Mumford (1999) with veteran actors like
Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier and Ben Kingsley; Roland Emmerich’s Independence
Day (1996) (starring Will Smith); the famous art house cult film Donnie Darko
(192001); and Margin Call (2011). This earned her the Robert Altman Awards at
the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards. On the small screen, McDonnell starred in
four seasons on the Syfy Network's award-winning television series Battlestar
Galactica (2004) in her critically acclaimed performance as President Laura
Roslin. Her recurring guest role as host on the popular television series ER
(1994) brought her an Emmy nomination. TNT's hit drama series Major Crimes
(2012) features her as Captain Sharon Raydor. This is the sequel to The Closer
(2005) in which McDonnell developed the role. McDonnell was nominated for the
Primetime Emmy(r). Her performance as a paraplegic star of soap operas in John
Sayles' critically acclaimed film Passion Fish (1992) earned her a Best Actress
Academy Award (r) nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Golden Globe nod.
