Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise at the age of a small kid. DuVernay worked as night nurses to afford her mother the time she needed throughout the day for the love of literature, art as well as theatre. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective way to spread social activism. DuVernay's mother also had an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate via art. DuVernay lived in Compton for most of her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of the extended family of her father in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was in awe of the idea to film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become interested in production for broadcast journalism. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to look-out and search for the house for a specific member of the Jury. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
